Privacy Policy
Last updated 7 October 2026
Whiskerhood ("we", "us") is a mobile app for looking after home cats and street cats. This policy explains what information we collect, why, who we share it with and the choices you have. If you have any questions, email privacy@whiskerhood.app.
Information we collect
Your account
- When you first open the World map, we create an anonymous account so you can use it without signing up.
- If you choose to save your account, we store your email address, or your name and email address from Google if you sign in with Google.
- Your player name, level and progress (such as badges and XP).
Your cats and what you log
- Cats, moments, diary entries, health records and photos you add are stored on your phone. If you save your account, a backup is kept on our servers so you can restore it on a new phone.
- If you put a cat on the map, we store its name, avatar, level, a short bio, its cover photo (you can turn this off for each cat) and a rough location rounded to about 2 km.
Street cats and community features
- Street cats you add, including a photo taken on the spot and a rough area. You can optionally add a hangout spot (about 150 m), which is only shown to established players.
- Check-ins, meals, water, health checks, vet trips, adoptions, bonds between cats and facts you record about street cats.
- Posts, stories, comments, photos, paws, follows, friendships, Cat of the Week entries and votes.
- Cat care spots you add (with their location and photo) and your confirmations of other spots.
- Lost cat alerts you raise (with where the cat was last seen) and sightings you report.
- Names you give to areas of the map.
- Reports you send about content or other players, and the people you block.
Location
- With your permission, the app uses your location to show the map around you, check that you are really with a cat when you check in, and suggest nearby cats to visit.
- For check-ins and similar actions we check your position at that moment and record the action. We do not keep a history of where you have been.
- Your home area hint and the map blocks you have walked through are stored only on your phone.
Device and technical information
- A push notification token so we can send you alerts you have turned on.
- Crash and error reports (device model, operating system, app version, what the app was doing, and your account ID, but not your name or email) so we can fix problems. Problem reports you send us from the app include what you write and, if you are signed in, your email.
How we use it
- To run the app: show the map, store your cats and progress, deliver notifications, and let you take part in the community.
- To keep things safe and fair: verify visits in person, prevent fake cats and spam, and act on reports.
- To fix bugs and improve the app.
- To produce anonymous, combined statistics such as the Street Cat Census (for example, how many street cats in a city are neutered). These never identify you.
We do not sell your personal information, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not share it with data brokers.
What other people can see
- Your player name and level, and the things you choose to share: cats on the map, posts, comments, street cat updates, care spots, area names and leaderboard positions.
- Who can see a home cat on the map is up to you: everyone, friends only, or just you.
Service providers
We use a small number of providers to run Whiskerhood. They process data on our behalf and only as needed to provide their service.
| Provider | What for |
|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, accounts, sign-in and photo storage |
| Expo | Push notifications and app updates |
| Sentry | Crash and error reports, problem reports |
| Sign in with Google (only if you use it) | |
| Cloudflare | Our website, email and photo delivery |
| OpenFreeMap / OpenStreetMap | Map tiles (your phone requests the map area it is showing) |
| Norwegian Meteorological Institute (met.no) | Weather on the map (your phone sends a rounded location) |
These providers may store data in the United States, the European Union or other countries. We take steps so your information is protected wherever it is processed.
How long we keep it
We keep your information while your account exists. When you delete your account, we delete your account and the data linked to it from our live systems straight away, including cats you put on the map, posts, comments, photos, check-ins and care records. Street cats you added that other people also look after stay on the map for them, without your name or photos. Copies in our backups are removed within 30 days. Anonymous statistics that cannot identify you may be kept.
Your choices and rights
- Delete your account: in the app, go to Account settings, or see how to delete your account.
- Remove cats from the map, change who can see them, or hide a cat's photo: in the World, open Privacy.
- Location and notifications: you can turn these off at any time in your phone's settings.
- Access or correct your data, or ask any question: email privacy@whiskerhood.app. Depending on where you live (for example the EU, UK or California) you may have additional rights, and we will respond within the time the law requires.
Children
Whiskerhood is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
We use encryption in transit, access rules on every database table, and we only store the minimum location detail needed. No system is perfectly secure, but we work hard to protect your information.
Changes
If we make important changes to this policy we will let you know in the app. The date at the top shows when it was last updated.
